Bondage and rope dart and my ensuing curiosity

“All rope dart artists are into bondage.”

So said the beautiful flow artist and submissive porn model who inspired me to get into rope dart and my then-partner to get into porn. My own relationship with rope dart was something along the lines of “interesting. . .I would like to play with that more often” – precisely mirroring my thoughts about Shibari.

Ha! Lets see you try to spin your double staves now!

On the one hand, the connection seemed strained. Sure, they both involved the sensual application and subtle manipulation of rope, but the link seemed a little too pithy and a little too clever for me to give it much credence. At the same time, I remained a staunch believer that you could tell worlds about someone’s bedroom style by dancing with them.

(Actually, I believe that dance is an evolutionary adaptation specifically *designed* to give potential sex-partners a sneak preview. Among the animals who dance, nearly all of them do so solely for sexual purposes.)

Yet my spinning, along with my choice of props to which I devote hundreds and occasionally thousands of life-hours, represent a part of me nearly as engrained and primal as my sexuality.

And the more rope dart artists I asked, the more knowing smirks and cagey affirmations I received.

Would YOU let this woman tie you up?

Enter: science. Uptight bitch that she is, science can be frustratingly reliable. So I put together a survey and handed that survey over to the internet. I posted it on a couple of fire retreat Facebook groups and a few flow arts subreddits.

Twelve hours later I had over 500 responses!

Here’s the survey.

I’m going to wait another few days to let the survey percolate out across the flow arts community and some time next week (after Fahrenheit), I’ll put together a statistical analysis to let y’all know what I’ve discovered.

Keep doing whatever comes natural!

What is Flow?

Flow is the state of grace that emerges as a natural consequence of full presence. The flow arts, also called spin juggling or object manipulation, alternatively engage and relax the body and mind. By following the natural movements of an object, we can unlock the previously hidden potential of our inner dance.
